4th Grade Hikes the Appalachian Trail to Connect with U.S. Geography

Swain Campus fourth grade recently traveled to the Lehigh Gap Nature Center for a hiking and geography adventure.

They followed some of their own trails and also spent time hiking the Appalachian Trail! They hiked almost 5 miles for a total of three and a half hours, including lunch at the peak!   Back in the classroom, 4th grade is learning about U.S. geography and the landforms that make up our country.  During their hike on the Appalachian Trail, they were able to connect with the geography they were learning, as they hiked through the mountains and valleys that are prevalent in our region.

Some favorite moments for these students included balancing along the steep cliffs at the end, seeing the view during lunch, and looking through their binoculars!

Special thank you to our trip chaperones, Adrian Sauers, Melissa Gaiser, Brian Lonabocker, and Sarah Kleppinger.
