When students on the Swain Campus enter fourth grade, they embark on a journey through United States history. Their first stop, learning basic map skills and using a compass.
Students develop an understanding for how a compass works and practice pacing steps to get from one destination to another. This activity is the first part of a larger project where students will create their own directions, and a partner, with the help of a map and compass, will need to follow! By learning how to navigate and use a compass, they are able to gain an understanding of how people travelled when first coming to America.
