8th-Grade Chair Project: The First Steps

Written by Angie Lande | Dec 16, 2021 4:31:15 PM

The chair project is a tradition at Swain, each 8th-grade student brings in a chair (or stool, bench, table) that they transform into a work of art.

They research artists and a variety of artwork in the brainstorming process. They select one artist and a piece of art by that artist that will become their inspiration for their chair. They recreate the work of art onto the chair, then make creative decisions while painting the rest of the chair.

We are three weeks into the project, and 8th-grade artists just finished sanding and priming the chairs and we are now fine tuning our research by selecting an artist and artwork. This is an exciting step because their chairs are like a blank canvas. The possibilities are endless!

Some of the artist and artworks that have been selected:

Claude Monet, The Water-Lily Pond
Hiroshi Yoshida, Avenue of Cherry Trees
Keith Haring (collage of paintings)
