Middlers Take on Engineering Challenge for Pi Day

The Middle School celebrated engineering during the week of February 21st.

Students enjoyed videos during advisory periods and STEM activities in their math classes. A planned school-wide engineering design challenge was scheduled to take place during the community period on Friday, February 26, but it had to be postponed until March 14 due to our snow day. It turned out to be a double celebration of Pi Day and engineering!

Students met in advisories and were presented with the challenge (from discovere.org) to design and construct paper towers to hold a textbook at least 12 inches off the ground for at least thirty seconds. Students were provided just ten pieces of printer paper, masking tape, and a price list ($1,000 per piece of paper, $100 per ΒΌ inch of tape). They were tasked with building the strongest tower at the lowest cost. Great ideas, terrific towers, and fun were the result!
