Adrian Vanegas '23 Creates Spitfire Model for FIRE
For his optional spring-semester FIRE project, Adrian Vanegas '23 created a physical model of the famous WWII-era British fighter plane, the Spitfire.
Adrian's project emphasizes not only the Spitfire's military prowess, but also its symbolic resonance within British society as a source of hope. During the Battle of Britain and the early years of WWII, Britain and the Allies were under siege from Nazi aggression. "Despite the damage done to the civilian population," says Adrian, "morale was boosted by the public knowing that Britain outperformed the [German] Luftwaffe. People had hope every time they saw a squadron of Spitfires fly above, as the plane had become a symbol for the public during Britain's darkest hours."
