Merle-Smith and Downtown Campus students traded places to learn (and teach) about sustainability.
Third Grade Visits the Merle-Smith Campus
Third-graders enjoyed a wonderful tour at the Upper School, centered around sustainability. While at Merle-Smith, they:
- visited the the solar panel field
- explored the community garden
- participated in a fun sustainability scavenger hunt
- met our bees during a beekeeping demonstration at the apiary. (Thank you, Mr. Elstein and Mrs. Parent, for teaching us about the bees!)
On a separate occasion, the Upper School Green Team traveled to the Downtown Campus to share some activities and presentations with third, fourth, and fifth-graders related to the theme of "Sustainable Futures."
The Green Team asked our Lower School students to imagine what their food, housing, fashion, energy, and shopping will be like in a sustainable future. The Green Team helped the younger students to consider the environmental impact of their future choices. For example, the Lower School students learned about meat created in laboratories, green roofs, carbon sequestration, and low carbon footprint shopping.
The Green Team presenters were "very kind, thoughtful, took their time, and stopped to explain things and had some great hands-on activities as well," said one of our Lower School teachers. "My students were very engaged!"
In turn, Green Team members were impressed with how much the Lower School students already understood about sustainability. Everyone ended the visit feeling hopeful and inspired about the future of our planet.
