Archery in Physical Education Class!

Archery - a favorite of physical education class has made a return to Swain this year for fourth and fifth grade!  

Erik Daly, Swain Physical Education Teacher, partners with Jason Reed, Certified Basic Archery instructor in the National Archery in the Schools Program, to bring this exciting and unique opportunity to our Swain students. The archery program started about 12 years ago with an equipment grant from the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). “The National Archery in the Schools Program is an in-school program aimed at improving educational performance among students in fourth to twelfth grade. And through it, students are learning focus, self-control, discipline, patience, and the life lessons required to be successful in the classroom and in life.” 

At Swain, we teach fourth grade in PE (as well as this year’s fifth grade, who did not get to have their regular classes last year).  

During a multiple week program students learn about the equipment, the 11 steps to archery success including stance, shot setup, follow though and reflect, and safety.  

Jason Reed, who also serves as the head archery coach at Swain during the spring sport season, delights in bringing the joy of archery to new people and in helping experienced archers achieve their highest possible potential.

Fifth through eighth grade archers may participate in after school archery as a Spring sport. Tournaments are held weekly over the last month of each season.
