On April 27, 2023, seventh-grade students on the Swain Campus traveled to Longwood Gardens for a cross-curriculum humanities and art field trip.
This trip to Longwood Garden is a seventh-grade tradition and expands classroom learning to the outdoors by combining the Watercolor Unit in Art Class with National Poetry Month in Humanities. Traveling in small groups, students took self-guided tours to explore the beautiful gardens while drawing and painting on-site. With handmade sketchbooks, students sketch the foliage and flowers and also took photographs for reference pictures.
In Humanities this week, students read the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost, which appeared in The Outsiders, and studied at length for deeper, figurative meanings. Students were asked to find an appropriate image to photograph or draw that was reminiscent of the poem.
