Black History Month was created to learn about and celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans and their role in shaping our history and future. Swain Pre-K took the month to learn about Black Inventors.
They learned about:
George Washing Carver, "The Peanut Man," who invented over 100 uses for peanuts including shaving cream.
Dr. George Franklin Grant, the first African-American Professor at Harvard, dentist, and inventor of the wooden golf tee. Both classes had fun with paint to create their own golf balls and wooden golf tees!
Donna Augusta and Henry T. Sampson, made major contributions to the invention of cell phone!
Garret Morgan, the inventor of the traffic light.
Our Pre- K friends also learned about notable Black figures in American history including Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Teaching Black history, and educating our students on all the "hidden figures" in our country's history, is an important step in sharing Black stories and amplifying Black voices during Black History Month and all year long.
