This week, Botany class is exploring the many ways in which we can extract and use parts of plants.
Using a crock pot to separate out aromatic oils from a range of herbs, students made their own essential oils. We also created our own herbal infusions and discussed their culinary uses. Finally, we extracted pigments from plants and discussed their uses in the textile industry. Using red cabbage as a model, the students extracted the purple anthocyanin pigment. By adding different chemicals to the purple pigment, the students were able to change the color of their extract from purple to pink and blue. The students had a great time investigating these unique plant uses, and we are all excited to explore more about the world of plants in the weeks ahead.
