Our Swain friends in preschool through third grade raised painted lady butterflies from larvae to adults.
Children learned the different stages of a butterfly's life including egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly. They even learned the word metamorphosis. The children were responsible for caring for the butterflies at all stages and ensuring they were feed, given clean water, and protected. While in the classroom, many students used a magnifying glass to explore the different stages of the life cycle.
During the final stage of life, when the caterpillar turns into a butterfly, each grade enjoyed time outside and released the butterflies out into the wild.
