Celebrating the Legacy of MLK and Welcoming Black History Month

Written by Rev. Jennifer Nichols & Karen Washington | Feb 4, 2022 4:23:31 PM

On the Downtown and Merle Smith Campuses, students, faculty and staff celebrated this month the legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In Lower and Middle School Chapels, Torsie Judkins, our Director of Enrollment Management, spoke of his admiration for and friendship with the late Congressman and civil rights activist Rev. John Lewis.

In Upper School Chapel, students from the Black Student Union welcomed Black History Month by reflecting on MLK’s Dream, and the work still to be done to see that dream, in the words of MLK,  “to become a reality in this day.” They offered a powerful challenge to each of us to do what we can to make ours a more welcoming and inclusive community by affirming and learning from perspectives different from our own.

We hope you will spend 30 or 60 minutes reflecting on one or both of these Chapel experiences, toward answering that same question.
