Exploring Hispanic Cultures Through Art: A Trip to LUAG

February 16, 2023

On Friday, February 10, fifth-grade Humanities and Global Language students came together for a memorable field trip to the Lehigh University Art Galleries (LUAG), a free museum on Lehigh's campus.

Moravian Academy parent and Curator of Education at Lehigh, Stacie Brennan, coordinated a tour with some of Lehigh’s college students to offer fifth graders a chance to learn about Cuban and Puerto Rican artists and the intersection of cultures as they study the Spanish language and the diverse cultures within the Hispanic community.

Students learned about pieces by Wifredo Lam (Cuban-French), Ricardo Viera (Cuban-American), Adál Maldonado (Puerto Rican-American), and Sandra Ramos Lorenzo (Cuban). Works included artist commentary on identity, culture, family, immigration, food, and religion. Students engaged meaningfully in conversations about themselves and the artists, drawing parallels and reflecting compassionately on the experiences of others. They then took what they learned and created their own prints using styrofoam, rollers, marker, and water. It was a wonderful experience! We hope to continue to partner with our friends at Lehigh to learn and grow together.
