This week, fourth grade culminated their unit on interpreting characters.
In the novel Tiger Rising, the main character Rob expressed his thoughts and emotions by whittling wood. Rob's mother told him, "You could never tell what would come out of the wood. It did what it wanted and you just followed." Each student was given a bar of soap and had the freedom to let the soap "do what it wanted." Students carved a variety of items from hearts to letters to animals. It was a way for students to use their creativity, empathy, perseverance, and curiosity!
