Fourth grade has been learning all about the weather and how the weather is measured.
Students are keenly aware that the sun heats the earth and the earth heats the air. Through convection, air moves as hot air rises and cool air falls. They have also learned that convection creates areas of high and low pressure which can be measured with an instrument called a barometer.
In this class, the students created simple, but effective, homemade barometers that can indicate trends in barometric pressure. If the trend goes lower, expect some cloudy weather with a chance of precipitation. If the trend goes higher, get ready for some nice weather! Congratulations to our budding meteorologists! They were under a lot of pressure... air pressure, that is!
