The garden club, a group of sixth through eighth grade students and their club advisors Mr.Lonabocker and Mr. Fleming, started their garden planning by planting seeds indoors.
They have planted bell peppers, broccoli, jalapeƱo, and parsley seeds. Both the broccoli and parsley have sprouted seedlings and hopefully the peppers are not too far behind.
While planting seeds, the garden club learned how to mix soil and choose the right size plant container, and learned about optimal growing conditions for each plant. They learned about the importance of temperature, sunlight, and nutrients in growing a garden. For example, why some plants need to start indoors while others can be sowed directly into the ground or garden bed.
Did you know? Parsley tastes like soap to roughly 14% of the human population! But it is a favorite of the butterfly population! In this area, parsley serves as an important food source for swallowtail butterflies.
