On the first day of school, students in Grades 1-5 started the day sitting in circles, getting to know one another. This process, known as The First Community Circle, will mark the start of each day of classes in Primer through Grade 5.
Why First Community Circle? This process helps to build community through sharing, games, planning and even problem-solving. Each child is a part of the circle and has a chance to have his or her voice heard. In developing community, the students are also developing their social skills as they build an understanding and a relationship with one another.
While the building of community is central to this process, the activities and discussions also help students to develop listening and observation skills along with reinforcing memory skills.
