The Common Market has presented Moravian Academy with a certificate of support for sourcing foods from local, sustainable farms.
According to the Director of Dining Operations, Ben Leffler, MA partnered with The Common Market in October "to streamline more local products into our schools." Since then, MA has supported 14 local farms, sourcing 11,484 pounds of food and investing over $12,000 in the local economy.
The Common Market is a nonprofit regional food distributor with a mission to connect communities with good food from sustainable family farms.
Mr. Leffler and Chef Ross Wilson have led the charge to make sustainability a priority for Dining Services. In addition to the tremendous impact they have made by sourcing food from local farms, they introduced reusable plastic to-go containers, which reduced the paper waste associated with the previous to-go containers by 1000s of pounds.
"This is all part of our vision to bring a greener, sustainable program to Moravian Academy. This is just the start of something big," says Leffler.
The next time you dine on campus, know that, thanks to our Dining Services team, not only does the food taste good, but it does good for the community.
