International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) finalist Rayna Malhotra '23 was granted an all-expenses-paid trip to Dallas, Texas, from May 13 to May 20, where she competed against more than 2000 young scientists hailing from over 75 different countries. 

The week-long event proved to be an awe-inspiring experience for Rayna, who garnered recognition from the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) for her research on tissue regeneration using epigenetic therapeutics. As a result, she received a prestigious $500 cash prize.

Rayna, a two-time ISEF finalist, held modest expectations for this year's participation, assuming it would not match the exhilaration of her previous experience. However, her preconceptions were swiftly shattered. The latest iteration of ISEF brought forth a myriad of surprises, challenges, and valuable lessons. 

The opportunity to interact with diligent young researchers from around the globe, representing diverse fields such as physics, astronomy, translational medicine, and biomedical engineering, left an indelible impression on Rayna. Engaging in events like the ISEF Pin Exchange and Student Mixture afforded her the chance to immerse herself in international cultures and traditions. 

Rayna says: 

The research I was invited to present at ISEF has been ongoing for 3 years now and investigates the use of epigenetic therapeutics as a novel approach to vascular tissue regeneration. I utilized RNA interference (RNAi) to regulate the expression of certain target genes and observed the downstream impacts on gene and protein expression. Having worked on this project for so long, it was extremely gratifying to share it with other like-minded high school students!
