The science department at Moravian Academy comprises a fantastic mix of teachers who have decades of experience in education, with some who have experience in research and/or industry.
Our goal is to inspire students to seek out science and new discoveries, to be amazed by the world around us, and to use critical thinking skills to determine their own truths. We have students collect and analyze data using Vernier sensors and data acquisition equipment, just as they would in a science lab course at a university. Whether students are propagating plants in Botany class or bringing in soil samples from home for AP Environmental Science, they aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, both literally and figuratively.
Stoichiometry Olympics are even fun for those who have extreme math phobia, and for those who desire a more rigorous experience, our AP courses feature custom labs and unique experiences such as analyzing the drag and lift forces of a golf ball, modeling the Beer-Lambert Law using a spectrophotometer, or diving into peer-reviewed scientific papers in AP Environmental Science. Our students make no bones about their love for muscle and bone Practicals in Anatomy, and they get the opportunity for dissections in Biology and comparative zoology.
More than 40% of MA students take two or more AP science classes, and the majority of our alums say that they feel very well prepared for their college courses. We are extremely excited to welcome our two newest faculty, Dr. Farley-Barnes and Mr. Reggie, as he is lovingly known, and they are already having a tremendous impact on our students.
