Sixth Grade Designs Spacesuits

The sixth grade students recently explored living and working in space on board the International Space Station. Students investigated what it takes to create a human-safe and comfortable environment in the absence of gravity. They learned the importance of the Environmental Control Life Support Systems (ECLSS) that make life possible on the ISS.

As a culminating activity, the students (working individually or in pairs) then used their new understanding of ECLSS to design spacesuits that would allow astronauts to bring portable life support systems with them on spacewalks.

The results were fun, creative and out-of-the-box spacesuit designs that are displayed in the sixth grade hallway in the lower level of the Devey building. Students, faculty and staff enjoyed walking through the ‘Sixth Grade Spacesuit Walk of Fame’ in recent weeks. All visitors were invited to vote for their three favorite designs.
