The Importance of Fostering Connections Virtually
Sra. Matlack's and Sra. Torres' Jardín de Infancia (kindergarten) and Sra. Guevara's fifth-grade Post Spanish Immersion classes have been sharing buddy activities throughout the school year. Each time we have come together, it has been a happy learning occasion: sharing cards, singing songs, conversations, tamale making, stories and valentines.
To continue encouraging friendships across the two grades, we planned a Zoom activity incorporating the Jardín de Infancia's current theme of matemáticas (math) through a shoe counting activity. We divided our classes into two separate sessions to allow for more intimate group conversations, facilitated by us both.
All in Spanish, the students discussed about how things are going and counted shoes in pictures shared by the fifth-grade students. The fifth-graders also shared that they would be sending videos of reading a children's book in Spanish for their buddies to enjoy.
We hope to do at least one more share before the end of the year, and are grateful for the parental support, technology and continued relationships which are helping us all to shine! It was so fun to see the buddy pairs excited to see one another, counting shoes together, noting the different kinds of shoes and whether we were counting individual shoes or a pair of shoes. They asked each other questions and it seemed that their smiles grew bigger throughout the duration of the sessions.
