US Students Test Diplomacy Skills in Model UN Conference

From Saturday, December 5 to Sunday, December 6, Upper School students put their diplomacy skills to the test as they participated in the virtual Model UN Conference hosted by the Institute for Domestic & International Affairs. 

Ellie Capobianco '23, Anjali Shankar '23, Ginny Toso '24, Theo Urban '22, and Olivia Wee '21 represented Moravian Academy. 

For Ellie Capobianco '23, this marked the first time attending the Model UN Conference, held virtually. She represented Estonia on the Committee of Disarmament and Security (DISEC). She said, "I learned so much in regards to the troubles of prohibiting/monitoring biological warfare and reluctant transparency as viral weapons are created not only for attacks but also for defense against larger artilleries and research purposes. My bloc attempted to pass a resolution paper with main clauses related to our assigned countries' views, such as urging imposition on economic trade sanctions to countries who do not follow the BWC if signed, suggested biowarfare tracking systems to hold accountability and prevent stockpiles, deploring preventative task forces, and many more." 

Olivia Wee '21 (left) was the sole returning member of of the Moravian Academy team that competed at Rutgers University in 2018. She too represented Estonia but as a member of the World Health Organization committee, discussing how to improve healthcare in conflict zones. "I was a co-sponsor of a resolution that passed and won the Distinguished Delegate award, placing third out of 52 delegates within my committee," she says.
