2020-21 Comenius Independent Study

September 10, 2020

All Moravian Academy sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to propose Comenius Independent Study Projects. Draft proposals are due mentors on or before September 22nd.

At their best, Comenius projects are the result of students deepening their involvement in a subject or field of study in which they have already made a substantial investment of time, interest, and energy.

Students consider things that they already know a lot about, subjects they've read about and topics they have explored even though no one assigned them, or questions that have sent them down Internet “rabbit holes.”

“It is far better for one’s interests to drive the formulation of a new project than for one’s desire to formulate a project to drive the creation of new interests.” —Stephen Molloy, Comenius Project Chair

Each project results in a tangible product. The results of Comenius projects generally fall into one of two categories: academic and practical. Academic products include various forms of reports and papers that detail the processes and elucidate the interpretations and conclusions of the project. Practical products may be any art or artifact, from paintings and plays to log cabins and robots, that results from a students research.

Mentors

All projects have a Moravian teacher or administrator who advises and supervises the student's project throughout the study period. Most mentors have expertise in the general subject area of a student’s project which allows them guide students throughout the course of their projects.
