From the HDC to Bear Creak and Refreshing Mountain
On behalf of the third, fourth, and fifth-grade teams, Mrs. Bellucci and Ms. Medina share with families the exploration, learning, bonding, and growth that happened during two overnight field trips for Historic Downtown Campus students.
Third and Fourth Grade at Refreshing Mountain
On Thursday, October 5, the third and fourth grades of the Historic Downtown Campus boarded buses and headed to Refreshing Mountain in Stevens, PA. This was the first combined overnight trip for the two grades and excitement was palpable!
Surrounded by a beautiful landscape, with support from their peers, students pushed themselves to try new activities, including activities outside of their comfort zones! The first day consisted of tackling the 37 foot climbing wall, the elevated ropes obstacle course, visiting and learning about farm animals, racing with pedal carts, and taking aim with slingshots. Fourth graders even got to try out the zipline! The evening consisted of team building and camaraderie across grade levels as the group enjoyed recreational activities, a variety show, and finally an evening around the campfire.
The next day students in the third grade worked together during a scavenger hunt activity and learned all about wildlife of Pennsylvania. The fourth graders got the chance to try their hand at archery and listen to the sounds of the great horned owl during their “Birds of Prey” presentation.
Students were surrounded by the encouragement of not only their Moravian Academy teachers and staff from Refreshing Mountain, but also their peers. The trip provided students with unique experiences through which they could connect with classmates, new and familiar, and participate in activities which, for many, were brand new! More importantly, they were able to strengthen their bond as classmates and learn, grow, and explore their curiosity and potential as students of Moravian Academy.
Fifth Grade at Bear Creek
Last week, HDC's fifth grade had their overnight retreat at Bear Creek Camp in Wilkes Barre, PA. The crisp air and foliage made for a wonderful fall backdrop for a fun-filled trip centered around building connections and community. Students were involved in a variety of activities including canoeing and kayaking, hiking, exploring the nature center, testing water quality, a ropes course and zip line, and team-building activities.
A highlight of the trip was students having "challenge by choice" - partaking in new experiences and encouraging their classmates.
Another highlight was the evening around the campfire, complete with s'mores and songs. The retreat was a memorable trip and a great way to strengthen the fifth grade community!
