Middle School Faculty Spotlight: Mrs. Michelle Leyesa

October 28, 2019

Michelle Leyesa has been teaching in the Science Department at Moravian Academy for two years. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Leyesa also directs the MS Yearbook, works with students to help prepare them for science competitions, teaches Speech and Debate, and is a sixth-grade advisor.

Let's get to know Mrs. Leyesa.

Why did you choose education/teaching as your profession?

I enjoy working with people. I love science and sharing my knowledge by helping others to appreciate science. Teaching has been a great joy.

Why middle school?

Middlers have a genuine love for learning. I enjoy their enthusiasm and excitement when they make new discoveries. Their energy is contagious!

What aspect of your curriculum/program do you enjoy teaching the most and why?

I am very passionate about life science. Biology was my favorite subject in school. I enjoy when students design experiments to test their own hypotheses and learn how to redesign their methods. When their experiments are successful, the expressions on their faces are priceless! It is the most satisfying part of my job.

What is your favorite moment/event at Moravian Academy during the school year?

I love listening to the music our students produce during Vespers, LoveFeasts, and spring concerts. From practice to their performance, their hard work and dedication is evident. Their talent never ceases to amaze me.

What do you most enjoy about teaching at Moravian Academy?

Going to Chapel weekly is a great part of our program. Each chapel shares new perspectives or experience which benefits our students greatly. It is such a unique experience.

What Moravian Academy tradition do you enjoy most?

Red and Gold games day is a favorite. It is a great way to show school spirit. I love that the teachers and students to get to know each other on a different level.

What is a classroom activity unique to you?

In 6th grade, students do many experiments but one experiment in particular is conducted in the spring based on their interests. The students work on a trimester long project which they present at the Science Expo.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to travel. In college, I spent a semester abroad in Madrid, Spain. My favorite places to visit have been France, Greece, and the Philippines (where my parents are from). China, Australia, and Africa are on my bucket list.
