A Guide to Staying Healthy This Flu Season
We have arrived at the dreaded time of year where it seems as though everyone is sick, or recovering from being sick. This reminds me of the importance that self-care provides in keeping our loved-ones as well as ourselves healthy.
Even though the reports from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) detailing Pennsylvania as one of the states with high flu activity may seem daunting there are things that we can do to decrease our chances of catching it.
Please remember it is not too late to get vaccinated. The CDC reports there are significant benefits obtained from the vaccination which include:
- It can keep you from getting sick from the flu.
- It can reduce the risk of flu-induced hospitalizations in children, working adults and older adults.
- It is a preventative tool for those with chronic health conditions.
- It helps protect women during pregnancy.
- It can be life-saving in children.
- It has been shown in several studies to reduce the severity of the illness in those who were vaccinated.
- Getting vaccinated yourself may also protect people around you.
Here are some suggestions of habits that you can use to help prevent getting sick:
- Wash your hands, and use hand sanitizer, often.
- Stay away from people who are sick.
- Please stay home from school if you are sick.
- Avoid touching your face and eyes.
- Sneeze and/or cough into your elbow, then wash or sanitize your hands.
- Get plenty of rest to help build your immune system.
- Exercise!
- Drink lots of water. We should drink our weight in ounces of water, or at least 64 ounces daily.
- Don’t share your food or drinks.
