PreK learned about the life of the Colonial Moravians during a field trip to Burnside Plantation. 

We had a wonderful field trip, and we only had a little bit of drizzle when moving between buildings. We visited the summer kitchen of the Burnside Plantation and learned about all of the foods cooked in the giant fireplace. We looked into the oven, using a flashlight, where they could bake 50 loaves of bread at one time! The orchard there grows four kinds of apples that we never heard of before. We also saw some of the vegetables grown in the garden there.

We went to the barn and learned how the Colonial Moravians sailed across the Atlantic to come here. Wool and flax were two fibers that came from the plantation for clothing. We passed around flax in its plant form and then felt linen. Wool cloth was also passed around. In the house, we learned how the fleece was cleaned, carded, pulled into thread, and then turned on the spinning wheel. We sang "Mary Had A Little Lamb," and learned that a lamb is a baby sheep.

It was fun to learn that kids, not much older than us, would collect buckets of water from the Monocacy Creek for the kitchen. We learned the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme, and then we each pretended to take the buckets off of the yoke, scoop the water, carry it back up the hill and then pour them into the big ceramic pot. The repetitive sounds and motions that we all made were fun. we also kept track of how many buckets of water we poured into the huge pot. We collected 16 buckets full!
