Swain Campus Cell Phone Policy 2022-2023 School Year
Moravian Academy believes in providing the best educational environment for its students. We value face-to-face communication skills as well as 21st-century technology skills. All students will be provided with a 1:1 device, and in order to promote the most effective learning environment, we will limit distractions throughout the school day by collecting student cell phones.
Student Cell Phone Policy
Students will have access to their school-issued devices throughout the school day (as appropriate for each age level). These devices are pre-loaded with all essential applications for school assignments and projects.
Ways this program will benefit students include:
- Improved focus on communication and socialization skills with one another and their teachers
- Fewer distractions from notifications and messages sent and received throughout the day
- Modeling in how to use technology tools to their educational benefit
- Consistency across all classes and teachers to enforce technology norms and usage
- Equitable access for all students to technology tools at school
FAQ’s:
How will the phone process work during arrival and dismissal?
When arriving at school, each student with a cell phone will simply place his/her phone inside the pouch available in each advisory or grade level. Phones should be off or silenced throughout the school day and will be redistributed before each student leaves for the day.
How can I get in touch with a student?
In the event a caregiver needs to contact their student, they can call the main office, and their child will be contacted as needed.
- Swain Campus Main Office: (610)-433-4542.
- For all non-emergencies, please email mtorres@mamail.net. These emails will be checked regularly during the school day and messages will be given to students and/or teachers as needed.
How can students contact their caregiver(s)?
Students may ask a teacher to use the classroom phones or visit the main office to reach out to their families, if needed. School personnel will be happy to assist students with contacting caregivers.
School trips and after-school activities
The use of cell phones on buses for either school trips or athletic events will be decided at the discretion of trip leaders, coaches, or administration. All faculty, coaches, or trip leaders will carry a cell phone and also know where facility phones are located should emergency calls need to be made in areas with poor service.
Medical exemption
Should a cell phone be deemed medically necessary for a student to carry, the family should work with both the nurse’s office and administration to formulate an official action plan. A note from a medical professional may be required for this exemption to be granted.
