Tammy the Turtle and Other Campus Creatures

April 09, 2021

This week, Mrs. Hummel's Prekindergarten class welcomes back Tammy, the 26-year-old box turtle who has been a part of Moravian Academy her entire life. In celebration of Tammy's return to the classroom since the onset of the pandemic, we're giving a shout out to the many creatures that grace the Downtown and Merle-Smith Campus.

In addition to Tammy, the Downtown Campus Primer classroom is currently home to caterpillars on their way to becoming butterflies!

At the Upper School, Mrs. Wendy Sheetz's science lab is home to:

  • Felicity, the friendly four-year-old bearded dragon
  • Emily, the winter white dwarf hamster
  • Camera-shy geckos inherited from former MA teacher who are not pictured.

In Dr. Kish's lab, you will find:

  • Octofuz, a red-kneed tarantula that Dr. Kish rescued from the Illick's Mill Nature Center when it closed several years ago
  • Rosy, a boa constrictor who was a pet of a Moravian Academy alumnus who could no longer take care of her.
  • Map turtles who are at least seven years old
  • Wonka, a red-eared slider once cared for by Mrs. Becky Miller's family
  • Puppy Dog, a camera-shy ball python that was also acquired from the Illick's Mill Nature Center, not pictured.

Guppies enjoy the good life in Mrs. Kathleen Weem's classroom.

And, of course, we have the furry residents of the Zemsky household on the Merle-Smith Campus, including Charlie and Willie! Charlie is a golden/lab/vizsla mix, and Willie is a terrier/poodle mix.

Finally, we have the unofficial creatures of campus -- our natural wildlife! We've had sightings of hawks, herons, and foxes, to name a few. Thanks to Dean of Students, Mr. Dan Axford, for sharing photos of his toad encounters.

If you have photos to share of creatures on campus, email them to Julia Fox at jfox@mamail.net!
