1984 Olympic Torch Arrives at Swain!

This week our Kindergarten and 5th-grade friends were treated to an OLYMPIC surprise when Mrs.Necioğlu brought in a torch from the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Screen Shot 2022-02-11 at 8.45.30 AMMrs. Necioğlu's father was on the team responsible for the planning and management of the logistics for the torch relay leading up to the 20th occurrence of the modern day Olympics.  The flame started in Greece, was flown to New York, and then traveled via the torch relay to Los Angeles.  

The torch relay traveled through 33 states and the District of Columbia, was carried by 3,636 torchbearers (including Mrs. Necioğlu's father) and traveled a distance of 15,000km in the United States!  

Our students got an up close view of the torch and learned about Olympic history.
