5th Grade Begins Their Study of Asian Culture and the Impact of World Religion
Swain Campus fifth grade social studies curriculum focuses on Asian studies. In order to better understand the history and cultures of Asia, students first learn about five major religions that have impacted - and continue to influence - the people of Asia: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam.
This week, the group kicked off their World Religions Unit with a visit from guest speaker and local pastor, Dan Miller, of the Edgeboro Moravian Church in Bethlehem. Pastor Dan shared an engaging presentation introducing students to basic facts about Christianity. This is Pastor Dan's fourth year speaking with our students. We especially enjoy having him launch our unit because he concludes his
presentation with an important message that all religions have some core values in common: they aim to help someone be a better person and they promote peace, love, kindness, and generosity. These values manifest themselves in a shared "Golden Rule" of treating others as you would like to be treated. Students enjoy identifying these shared values as we explore each religion. We look forward to hosting our guest speaker on Hinduism in two weeks!
