5th Grade Historical Fiction Book Projects

December 03, 2021

Each month, our 5th-grade friends read a new book, complete a book project, and present to their class.  The goal is not only to introduce our students to different literature genres, but to develop their public speaking competencies.

Starting in September, our 5th-graders, lead by Mrs. Kish and Mrs. Necioğlu, read a variety of genres while learning comprehension skills through the use of mentor texts, modeling, and guided practice. Students read independently, at their own level, and produce monthly book projects.

In November, our 5th-grade friends read historical fiction novels and presented to their classes in the first person, as the main character of their chosen book.  Some historical fiction novels that were chosen include,

An integral part of a Swain School education is the emphasis on public speaking.  These book projects are just another way our students are given the opportunity to perfect their public speaking skills.  Students are coached on volume & clarity, delivery, eye contact, body language, and audience engagement. Each element vital to effective public speaking.
