A Winter Wonderland for Recess

March 08, 2022

Thanks to Moravian Academy alum and current Swain School Parent, Ted Rosenberger '84 MA, our Swain School friends had a snowy treat all week to enjoy during recess.

All week,  giggles, screams, and laughter could be heard throughout the day as the students bundled up and went sledding.   It is never an easy setup for Ted, he was even there checking on the snow at 3AM, but as he told us this year, "the smiles and screams of joy from the kids motivate me to solve the problems each year and get it working!" Screen Shot 2022-01-07 at 10.34.30 AM

This winter tradition, that seems to appear every year when our kiddos need it the most, started as a solution for a makerspace project during the 2016-2017 school year.  Our current 6th grade class was in 1st grade and Mr. Sauers had the class build their own sleds.  When it was time to test out their sleds, the only thing missing was snow.  Ted researched snow making, purchased the snow machine, made our first ever snow hill, and presented to the class about snow making and the science behind it.  And started the snow hill tradition!
