Athletics Update: September 15, 2023

September 17, 2023

It was a busy week for athletics, filled with some exciting performances on the fields, courts, and course.  Let’s not forget that we ended the week with the all school Red, White, and Gold Games Day!

The golf team finished the regular season with a 12-1 record and ended up in 2nd place in the Colonial League regular season.  The team now shifts their focus to competing in the Colonial League Tournament at Bethlehem Municipal on Monday, September 18. The group will look for some great collective performance to win the League Tournament.  Good luck to our golfers and Coach Higgins!

The girls’ varsity tennis team is 8-1 overall and suffered its first setback of the season this past Thursday.  The team was defeated 3-2 by 3A powerhouse Parkland High School  The girls should be proud of their performance as they gave the visiting Trojans all they could handle. With only three regular season matches left, the team looks poised to once again compete for the Colonial League Tournament title and the District title.

With the defending 3A State Champions, Northwestern, coming to visit the Merle-Smith Campus, we expected to see a great boys' soccer match.  The impressive crowd should not be disappointed by the game they witnessed.  The Lions unfortunately lost by a score of 3-2 in overtime. Overall the boys’ soccer team is 5-1 and is currently in second place in the Colonial League standings.

The girls’ varsity field hockey team also experienced a setback on the road this past week losing to Wilson by a 1-0 score.  The team continues to play well, but will need to find the back of the cage to return to their winning ways.  The team’s overall record is 4-2.

The boys’ and girls’ cross-country team had two meets this week due to last week’s cancellation.  This past Thursday, seven schools from the Colonial League came to the Merle-Smith Campus to run.  With two meets under their belts, the boys’ team is currently 5-4 while the girls’ team is 6-3.  There is a lot more running to come as the teams travel to Saucon Valley on Tuesday.

The girls’ soccer team finished the week with a 2-1 record posting two home victories over Wilson and Catasauqua.  The team’s record is 3-4 overall as they look to continue to take steps forward in the standings as they travel to Notre Dame Green Pond on Monday.
