Black History Month Interactive Bulletin Board
Every year during Black History Month, our teachers make it a priority to discuss, learn, and reflect on Black History in America. This year was no exception and Mrs. Necioğlu created an Interactive Black History Month Bulletin Board.
The bulletin board features photos of famous Black Americans and one of their famous quotes. No name, just the picture and a quote. Each photo also has a QR code that links to biographical information about the individual pictured.
Older students have the opportunity to engage with the display on their own, while our younger students are able to access the board with the help of fifth grade partners. Students are encouraged to select a person they want to learn more about and if they need help, a fifth-grader will scan the QR code to access the biographical information. The older students will use their research skills to skim for important information to highlight each individual’s contribution to the United States and our global society and share this information with their younger buddy. This cross-grade activity highlights the strength of a PS-8 campus!
This year includes new faces and the stories of Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes, the first black quarterbacks to start against each other in a Super Bowl!
As the month continues, different Black Americans will be represented on the bulletin board and have their stories told. Many students have already visited the bulletin board and will continue to do so throughout the month.
The representation, learning, and understanding of Black contributions to our society is an important part of amplifying Black voices and stories during Black History Month and all year long.
