In the 6th-grade post-Spanish Immersion humanities class, we have been learning about the culture and people of Spain and many of its traditions. One very similar one to our Moravian Putz is the Belén that many families put up in their houses or can visit at churches. 

The most important figure included is Baby Jesus, which often doesn’t get placed until the 25th. Also in the stable are Mary and Joseph, surrounded by animals. The three kings are seen in the distance, approaching the scene.

Some of the additional scenes are of farmers with their animals, families celebrating the birth of Jesus, and others going about their daily routines, waiting to hear the good news. A funny Spanish tradition is to hide the “caganer” somewhere in the Belén. 

We used modern Playmobil figurines and toys to depict the manger scene. Then we also added some elements: rocks, sand, sticks and moss to make it a little more realistic. What a fun and creative way for us to learn about this Spanish Christmas tradition!
