Everyday Excellence: Small Moments with Significant Impact
We often use the word "excellence" in speaking about our academic programs, and we see evidence of excellence throughout our school.
Moravian Academy seniors are accepted to a range of outstanding right-fit colleges and universities and are well prepared for the next step in their academic journeys. Our Middle School students win numerous honors at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences annual state research competition each spring. These outcomes and many others are the result of moments of excellence that happen every day at Moravian Academy.
I am fortunate to be able to visit classrooms from PS-12 across all three of Moravian’s campuses. As preschool students play joyously with classmates, they communicate, collaborate and develop empathy - all of which are critical skills for learning. I see Lower School students make connections between a work of art and a poem as they understand how a common theme runs through both. I see experiential learning in our classrooms, science labs and makerspaces where curiosity and creativity are nurtured and celebrated.
I run across a teacher choosing to meet regularly with a new colleague because they want that colleague to be successful. I see another teacher after school teaching two students how to ride a bike so they can fully participate in an upcoming field trip. I see other teachers using new approaches to instruction they learned over the summer to help students develop a growth mindset and a willingness to take chances in the classroom.
And because I visit classrooms from PS - grade 12, I see how daily moments of excellence at the Historic Downtown and Swain Campuses provide the foundation for more such moments at the Merle-Smith Campus. An English teacher weaves experiential learning into her curriculum; students in science class use creativity to solve complex problems; and in a history class students are asked to imagine how farmers in Mongolia could use new agricultural approaches. The daily moments of excellence that our educators create for students in Preschool carry forward all the way to Upper School. Excellence is about the moments teachers and students create in classrooms every day as well as the big achievements we celebrate.
