February Observances and Celebrations
Black History Month
February is Black History Month and is a time to pay tribute to the African Americans who have contributed to our country and honor their history and culture. Black History Month was officially recognized in 1976 and has been celebrated in the United States every February since. The theme for Black History Month 2023 is “Resistance”.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science
February 11th is International Day of Women and Girls in Science and is a day to help promote equal and complete access to participation in science for women and girls.
Nirvana Day
February 15th is Nirvana Day is celebrated by Buddhists to commemorate the death of Buddha when he attained complete nirvana or parinirvana.
World Day of Social Justice
February 20th is World Day of Social Justice. It is intended to raise awareness of social injustice and to bring together diverse communities around the world to eradicate poverty, gender, physical discrimination, illiteracy, and religious discrimination.
Ash Wednesday
February 22nd is Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lenten period leading up to Easter, when Christians believe Jesus was resurrected.
