Fifth grade geologists on the Swain Campus recently completed their study of the earth by designing and creating 3D models of the layers of the earth.

The study of geology and creating 3D models of the earth's different layers has become a favorite among our Swain Campus fifth-graders. They are tasked with creating a 3D model using any material they want. The goal is to use their imagination, be creative, and demonstrate their understanding of the earth's interior.  This year we saw models crafted from sand, styrofoam, lego, felt, clay, metal, and macrame. Regardless of material used, all the layers needed to be represented and shown in proportionate thickness.  

Layers included: 

• Crust : Continental Crust  & Oceanic Crust
• Lithosphere
• Upper Mantle
• Asthenosphere
• Lower Mantle
• Outer Core
• Inner Core
