Food Explorer Passports

January 24, 2020

This week, Susan Hurd, Registered Dietitian for Sodexo Universities & Independent Schools, spoke with the Lower School about healthy eating choices and the importance of trying new foods.

Mrs. Hurd highlighted the key food groups that should be part of students' diet, according to ChooseMyPlate.gov: fruits, grains, vegetables, proteins, and dairy. One of the key takeaways for students from Mrs. Hurd's assembly was the nutritional benefit of diversifying your eating palette.

Next week, students in Grades 1-5 will be given a challenge to try something new from the dining hall. Each student will be given a passport and if they try something new they will receive a stamp. Some of the new food choices next week include tofu veggie cacciatore, snap peas, roasted peppers and onions, teriyaki chicken stir-fry, sauteed kale and more. Our hope is that each student will receive five stamps by the end of the week.
