Interactive Black History Month Bulletin Board

February 18, 2022

During Black History Month, our Swain teachers are making it a priority to discuss, learn, and reflect on Black History in America. Recently, Mrs. Necioğlu created an Interactive Black History Month Bulletin Board.

The bulletin board features photos of famous Black Americans and one of their famous quotes.  No name, just the picture and a quote.  Each photo also has a QR code that links to biographical information about the individual pictured.  In addition to scanning the QR code and learning about different Black Americans, Mrs. Necioğlu also created a scavenger hunt worksheet where students can match the photo and quote to a description of each individuals contribution to the United States and our global society.

Some examples include:

Misty Copeland, the first Black woman to be promoted to principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre’s history.

Mae Jemison, the first Black women to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor.

Booker T. Washington, an American educator, author, orator, and advisor to several U.S. presidents, who was born enslaved.

As the month continues, different Black Americans will be represented on the bulletin board and have their stories told.  Many students have already visited the bulletin board and will continue to do so throughout the month.

The representation, learning, and understanding of Black contributions to our society is an important part of amplifying Black voices and stories during Black History Month and all year long.
