Merle-Smith Campus Welcomes Mykee Fowlin
On Monday, February 6, students on the Merle-Smith Campus enjoyed a meaningful and moving presentation from guest speaker, Dr. Michael Fowlin, or “Mykee”, who performed his one-man show, “I am not the enemy.”
This is a repeat visit to Moravian Academy for this outstanding performer; in 2016 he visited the Downtown and Merle-Smith Campuses, where he performed “Even Small Crayons Make Bright Marks” for our Lower School students, and “You Don’t Know Me Until You Know Me” for the Middle School and Upper Schools, which he also performed for Swain students in 2018.
Mykee began experimenting with different voices at the age of 9, which he has honed into a well-developed skill as a character actor. His 75 minute show combines his skill as a performer with his training in clinical psychology, weaving together spoken-word poetry with a series of character monologues, personal stories, and reflection. The result is an engaging, at times humorous, and often challenging experience that encourages, educates, and entertains, all at the same time. His goal is for the audience to leave his performance “with that wonderful, awakening feeling of beauty: the beauty within one’s self and the beauty within others; the celebration of our differences, and the acceptance of our shared experiences.” He achieved that goal on Monday; his visit has already rippled into a variety of classroom conversations, as well as less formal interactions in the lunch room and lounge.
Dr. Fowlin's visit was timed to coincide with Martin Luther King Day, to encourage and grow the Beloved Community King spoke of so often in his sermons and speeches.
