Middle School Spotlight: Ms. Janet Zapata

December 11, 2019

Ms. Janet Zapata began working at Moravian Academy just a few shorts months ago. She serves as the Middle School Divisional Assistant, supporting the administration, faculty, students and parents on a daily basis.

Let's get to know Ms. Zapata...

  • Why did you choose education and working in schools as your profession? Working in a school gives a chance to positively impact students on a daily basis and also gives the opportunity to meet new people every day.

  • Why middle school? Middle School is very energetic. I enjoy the upbeat environment.

  • What aspect of your curriculum/program do you enjoy teaching the most and why? I’m looking forward to incorporating mindfulness and meditation with our students in the near future. Some of the benefits of mindfulness include decreasing stress and anxiety, improving self-esteem and self-regulation, and increasing calm.

  • What is your favorite moment/event at Moravian Academy during the school year? Red & Gold Games! I was really blown away being that this is my first year working at Moravian Academy with the school spirit that is brought by students as well as Faculty and Staff.

  • What do you most enjoy about working at Moravian Academy? I simply enjoy contributing to student learning, whether it's in the form of teaching a lesson, working with a student one-on-one or helping to maintain the culture of learning.

  • What do you hope to provide to students in your office and what do you hope they take away? My goal is to help the school run smoothly. Having an efficient front office and creating a positive environment has a tremendous impact on how a school operates.

  • What Moravian Academy tradition do you enjoy most? I enjoy the Lovefeasts. It’s a wonderful connection to the historic Moravian Community and Bethlehem and allows us to share time together

  • What’s the biggest lesson you have learned from your students? To listen and be there. Children simply need an adult to be the adult, help with schoolwork, work through peer challenges, and sometimes to just talk.

  • What's something we don’t know about you? I’m a certified Yoga Instructor, I enjoy teaching while continuing to further my practice.

  • What do you like to do in your free time? Yoga, Running, and I have a 10-month old boy with whom I enjoy spending time with.
