Mission in Action: Leading with Integrity

February 09, 2024

When we call students to lead with integrity at Moravian Academy, we are asking them to think deeply, connect with one another, consider their impact, and create a wholeness of spirit that transcends the individual to build a culture of belonging on campus. One way that students fulfill the part of our mission is by taking an active role in planning and leading our weekly chapel experience.

Upper School chapel is a shared, community space for spiritual reflection, prayer, sacred and secular wisdom, song, story-telling, and a wide variety of religious and cultural celebrations. Chapel reflects both our Moravian tradition and the rich diversity of our students, creating a community of belonging and curiosity toward others. Chapel nurtures an ongoing conversation about identity and belief, offers time for reflection, and educates students on the world’s religious traditions. Chapel is where we develop the art of public speaking, and where visual, musical and performance art bring stories alive.

Throughout January 2024, Upper School Chapel was led by Moravian Academy’s Class of 2025, with inspiration from their eleventh grade English classes. From their work over the fall semester, students identified three themes: Epiphany, Belonging, and Home, then presented each theme through their own original poetry, reflections, and music.  Two juniors, Autumn Nembhard '25 and Percy Fowler '25 share how Community Time, and chapel in particular, have nourished their curiosity and empowered them both as storytellers and as listeners.

Moravian Academy nurtures the joyful spirit of each learner and empowers inclusive global citizens to think critically, communicate effectively, lead with integrity, and strive for excellence.
