Moravian Academy’s Upper School encourages everyone, adults and students alike, to view both experiential and intellectual learning as life-long processes, and to appreciate reading as a fun, easy, and satisfying way to learn about almost anything.

Like most endeavors, reading is a talent that improves with simple, regular practice. The Upper School English Department, therefore, asks all its students to read over the course of the summer at least three books, one of which should be nonfiction and another fiction.

Rising 9th Grade students should read three books, choosing at least one of their nonfiction and fiction selections from the lists below. Students should also watch at least one movie from the list below. Book shopping lists on Amazon (Nonfiction & Fiction) have also been created for your convenience. A printable list, which will also be made available at local Barnes & Noble bookstores (Lehigh Valley Mall, Center Valley. and Bethlehem) locations) in the near future, can be found here.

Rising 10th Grade students should read Paulo Coelho’s fiction novel, The Alchemist. Students are also expected to read at least two more books, one of which should be nonfiction and one published in 2018-2019.

Rising 11th and 12th Grade students should read three books, one of which will be fiction, another nonfiction, and one published in 2018-2019. Please note that the following two courses have specific requests:

• Fall Semester Shakespeare students must read the following nonfiction: E.M.W. Tillyard’s The Elizabethan World Picture;

• Fall Semester AP English Literature and Composition students must read the following fiction: Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake.
