2020-21 Middle School Athletic Update: September 3rd

September 03, 2020

We have come to the difficult decision that the Middle School athletics season will not operate as planned with competitions. We do not make this decision lightly. After many discussions with our Reopening Task Force and our partners at St. Luke’s University Health Network, we made this decision based on:

  • Our need to keep our student cohorts separate during athletic practices. Our goal is to continue to be open for in-school instruction as long as we can. If we were to intermix our cohorts during afternoon practices and games, it would reduce the health and safety benefits of the cohorting system we have in place in the Middle School. Essentially, each member of the team would become a new first-degree contact for other members of the team from other cohorts and grades.

  • Moravian Academy's health and safety plan is highly customized to our student body and our campus. We would not be able to confirm if other schools we compete with are following equivalent operating protocols.

We understand this decision comes with disappointment to many. We believe students should be active after school and are looking for ways to continue. We are looking to develop a program that would preserve many of the benefits of afterschool sports for our Middle School students, including physical health and wellness, leadership and teamwork skills, time management, and positive social experiences with peers. With this in mind, our staff is dedicated to developing an alternative program that would be able to support the benefits of participating in athletics while continuing to maintain our cohorting.  This program will not look the same as our fall athletics offering, and we will not be competing against other schools.
