Athletics Update: 9/10/21

The fall athletic season is in full swing with approximately 232 athletes participating in a sport Downtown and at Merle-Smith.

Golf
The golf team is off to a strong start with a 5-3 record.  The team will compete in the Colonial League Championship at Bethlehem Municipal on Monday, September 20th.  The team will look to capture the Colonial League Championship. 

Tennis
The girls’ varsity tennis team is currently 6-0 overall.  The girls are poised to compete for the Colonial League and District XI titles.  The team will compete in the Colonial League Championship on Thursday 9/30 – 12 pm at Saucon Valley high school.

Boys' Varsity Soccer
The boys’ varsity soccer is off to a 1-2 start. The team opened up with a 1-0 loss to defending PIAA AAA Champion, Lewisburg. The team started their Colonial League schedule this week with a loss to defending league champion, Northwestern Lehigh by a score of 3-1.  The boys rebounded well with a convincing 7-3 victory over Catasauqua. The team hosted a successful boys’ soccer play day during the pre-season segment.  Six teams from around the Lehigh Valley and beyond competed in a series of varsity and JV matches to prepare them for the season.   The team will look to finish a busy week with games vs. Notre Dame of Green Pond on Saturday.  The kickoff is set for 10 AM.

Girls' Varsity Field Hockey
The girls’ varsity field hockey team is also enjoying a successful start to the season.  The team‘s record is 2-0, posting two away wins vs. Pen Argyl and Saucon Valley.  Under the leadership of Coach Sheetz, the team will look to continue its winning ways as they close out the week by facing Palisades High School at home on Friday. The field hockey play day held on Aug. 25th was another great success.  Our program welcomed ten teams from the Lehigh Valley for a fun-filled day of field hockey games.  Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who helped out!

Boys' and Girls' Cross Country
The boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams had a quick start to the year.  The program hosted the Lions’ Invitational on September 3rd.  Twenty-two schools and over 600 runners competed in middle school boys and girls, varsity girls, varsity boys, and sub-varsity boys and girls races.  This was a great way to start the running season!  A big thank you goes to all of the parents who volunteered their time to make this race a success!  The varsity boys’ team won a 1st team trophy that day.  The runners then stayed at home this past Wednesday as we hosted the first Colonial League meet of the year.  Good luck to all of our runners with the rest of the season!

Girls' Varsity Soccer
The girls’ soccer team under the head coach Darien Vercillo is looking to continue to develop after winning their third consecutive District XI Championship.   The girls are off to a good start with a 0-1-1 record after tying Colonial League perennial power Northwestern and losing 2-0 at home vs Faith Christian in a non-league match-up.
