Chinese New Year 2022

February 04, 2022

On Tuesday, Moravian Academy celebrated the Chinese New Year with bright cultural activities, food, and more.

On the Merle-Smith Campus, Chinese classes celebrated this traditional holiday throughout this week. Ms. Jane Wang shares:

Students wrote Spring Festival Couplets, and Chinese characters, such "福“ (Blessing), 虎(tiger, because of this year is Tiger year according Chinese zodiac), made Chinese lanterns, etc. to decorate classrooms. The Advanced Chinese Culture class also made Jiaozi (Chinese dumplings ) in class as part of the celebration of the Chinese New Year. 虎年快乐! hú niá kuà ilè (Happy Tiger Year!)

Meanwhile, the Spanish Immersion kindergarten class had a special presentation from Acting Director, Ms. Dawn Brews, who has worked and lived in China. She shared how the holiday is celebrated in different parts of the world and talked with students about how she had to learn a new language just like they are.

Our first-grade class had a special presentation from Emma Shi '33 and her mom, Haiyan Jia! Miss Endress writes:

An enormous thank you to Emma and her mom for their amazing presentation about Chinese New Year. We learned so much! Emma did an extraordinary job reading a story to us, we had so much fun making Chinese lanterns and are looking forward to getting to dance with the paper dragon at recess tomorrow. We are also grateful for the treasures in the goodie bags we received. It was as much fun as if we were in China celebrating with Emma’s relatives. Thank you so much for sharing your culture with us. Happy Chinese New Year and may you be blessed with the wisdom, strength and courage of the tiger this year.
