Design Thinking in the Post-Spanish Immersion Classroom (and Beyond)
Fifth and sixth-grade students in the post-Spanish Immersion (PSI) humanities program learned about the process and steps of design thinking while using their Spanish language skills.
The goal is for students to embrace the expansiveness of design thinking; i.e. They can interact and improve their experiences and products, whether in school or in the real world by thinking big, expressing creativity, and working as a team.
In fifth grade, students in Srta. Medina's class imagined prototypes for a hypothetical playground by working together as a team. They interviewed their Kindergarten buddies in the Jardín de Infancia in Spanish via Zoom to collect ideas on a playground from the people who would get the most enjoyment out of using it. The older students really appreciated spending time with their buddies and remembering what they were like at that age. After they make their prototypes, they will share them with their buddies for feedback and to make improvements.
Meanwhile, sixth-graders had a similar experience as they learned about design thinking. Thinking about the many fun learning experiences they had this year, they interviewed each other on how they could build upon that to create an even better PSI class for the students who will follow in their footsteps.
We're proud of our students for embracing experiences, cultures, and languages in order to experience agency and work towards solutions for the multifaceted challenges they may face beyond the classroom.
